I do not know how many conversations I have gotten into about scientists and their needs where I have shocked the conversation by showing that the vast majority of people with PhDs are not engaged in academia, that the number of people with science degrees working in academia is far surpassed by those in industry. In fact, more scientists work in a non-profit setting than work for 4 year institutions.
